Stay safe and secure: NYC building extreme weather and flood guide

With hurricanes and extreme weather events becoming more common, New York City is experiencing more rain and unexpected flooding than ever before. Whether you live in a flood-prone area or not, it's important to be ready. This guide will help you prepare for extreme weather events including floods, stay safe during them, and recover afterwards.

Before the flood: Preparation is key

  1. Securing your property

If you have outdoor furniture, plants in pots, or other things that can move, bring them inside. If you can't bring them in, tie them down so they don't fly or float  away.

Look around your home for places where water has leaked before. These spots might flood again. If you can, fix these areas. If you can't fix them right now, think about how you can protect them temporarily. Maybe use plastic sheets or waterproof tape.

  1. Emergency supplies

It's smart to have some things ready in case of a flood:

  • Flashlights (don't forget extra batteries!)
  • A battery-powered or hand-crank radio
  • Fully charged portable phone chargers
  • Sandbags (you can usually get these from your local hardware store or fire department)

These items can be really helpful if the power goes out or if you need to block water from coming into your home.

  1. Stay informed and communicate
  • Keep an eye on the weather forecast
  • Find out where the nearest safe places are, like community centers or schools that might be used as shelters
  • Make sure you know how to contact your building manager or landlord quickly
  • Communicate with your residents in advance and have established a system for ongoing communication.

Knowing this information can help everyone make quick, informed decisions if needed.

  1. Early detection and monitoring
  • Assign someone to regularly check the basement and other flood-prone areas during heavy rainfall.
  • Use sandbags in areas where water might enter. Have these ready in advance.
  • Stay connected with your building management or onsite team. Report any signs of water ingress immediately.

During the flood: Safety first

  1. Safety first
  • Stay indoors and avoid flood waters at all costs. Flash floods can occur suddenly and are extremely dangerous.
  • Don't attempt to walk or drive through flooded areas. Even shallow water can be deceptively strong.
  • Be extremely cautious with electricity. Avoid touching electrical equipment if you're wet or standing in water.
  1. Protect your property
  • Move valuable items to higher ground if possible. This includes electronics, important documents, furniture etc.
  • Disconnect electrical appliances if safe to do so.
  • Relocate your vehicles to elevated areas.
  1. Evacuation procedures

      If evacuation is advised:

  • Act quickly and calmly. Don't delay, officials issue these warnings for your safety.
  • Grab your pre-prepared emergency kit, important documents, and necessary medications.
  • Head to the previously identified local safe zones or shelters.
  • Inform friends or family members of your evacuation plan and destination.

Post-flood actions: Recovery and rebuilding

  1. Ensure safety before returning
  • Wait for the all-clear: Do not return home until authorities have declared it safe to do so.
  • Be cautious of potential hazards like weakened structures, exposed wires, or contaminated water.
  1. Assess and document damage
  • Conduct a comprehensive inspection of your building.
  • Document all damage meticulously with photographs and videos.
  • If you're a tenant, promptly report any damage to your landlord or property manager.
  • Building managers should encourage all residents to report unit-specific damages as soon as possible.
  1. Begin the recovery process

               Insurance claims

  •  Contact your insurance company immediately to start the claims process.
  •  Provide them with the documentation of damages you've collected.

                Clean-up and repair

  • Begin clean-up efforts, but prioritize safety. Wear protective gear and be aware of potential contaminants in floodwater.
  • Consider professional help for extensive damage or mold issues.
